East gets sketchy fast. I was told to “escape the campus bubble,” to explore, to venture far past 63rd, and immerse myself in each and every one of Chicago’s 77 diverse neighborhoods. This is a really nice neighborhood and is safe to the north (sort of), west, and south. Sadly, Chicago’s South Side is probably the reason the city as a whole is one of the most dangerous cities in the country. The good thing is, the Rock Island Metra train runs right though there, and you can get to downtown on the express trains in about 20 minutes. But at the same time, I was also told from my first day of college to reject the media’s portrayal of Chicago’s South Side. This is a very poor community, yet … Then it's bad again, and is once again safe when you get to the lakefront around 55th Street, the area around the University of Chicago. Matter of fact, there’s actually a lot of safe fun to be had in a lot of pretty awesome neighborhoods. South of that it gets a little dicey - there's some pockets of safety around 35th and Halsted, a neighborhood called Bridgeport. We’re not saying that Chicago is all bad.
